The 5 Best Albums Of January 2019

james blake_assume form1. James Blake – Assume Form
Blake’s latest album feels a lot lighter and more accessible than his previous works, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Assume Form sits in his discography as a pop-inspired palate cleanser. A lot of the seriousness of his previous work has been stripped away, but the themes and tone of the album are still recognisably his. An interesting change of pace for Blake.

malibu ken2. Malibu Ken – Malibu Ken
Malibu Ken combines the unique lyrical talents of Aesop Rock with the surreal production of Tobacco to create experimental, abstract hip-hop. Their self-titled debut is bizarre and quite unlike anything Aesop Rock, or any artist, has released before. This record is abrasive and may take a few listens to fully appreciate, but hidden within are multiple infectious beats.

remind me tomorrow_sharon van etten3. Sharon Van Etten – Remind Me Tomorrow
Remind Me Tomorrow doesn’t push any envelopes but presents a number of charmingly candid, introspective tracks. The album is Van Etten’s take on synthpop and is reminiscent of Lorde’s latest effort. Unlike Lorde’s work, Remind Me Tomorrow drips with melancholy and emotion underpinned by a rich and powerful vocal performance.

twilight sad_it won't be like this blah4. The Twilight Sad – IT WON/T BE LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME
What this album lacks in depth, it makes up for in atmosphere. The Twilight Sad mix post-punk and shoegaze fundamentals with synths which feel ripped from the original Blade Runner soundtrack. The result, while one dimensional, is an engaging and largely enjoyable record. Think of a Scottish Hot Fuss, but from a dystopian alternate reality.

toro y moi_outer peace5. Toro y Moi – Outer Peace
Something of a departure for Toro y Moi, this album is packed to the gills with upbeat, funky tracks. The album bogs down in the middle and ultimately lacks substance, but the summery vibes give the record some much-needed fun. If the colds of winter are getting you down, the warm grooves of Outer Peace might be for you.
