Papa Roach – Who Do You Trust?

I’ve gone on something of a journey this evening. My natural reaction when I saw a long-forgotten name, Papa Roach, amongst the week’s new album releases was one of surprise. I hadn’t thought about the band since the last time I played Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2, surely nobody still listens to these albums?

Who Do You Trust? is the 10th album from Papa Roach and, despite my scepticism, the California based foursome has maintained a relative level of success. While many of their nu-metal peers struggled to adapt their sound as fashions changed, Papa Roach has been able to reinvent themselves as an accessible rock outfit.

The album is front-loaded with toe-tapping tunes which fit their new identity. Many of the earlier songs on the record are carried on the back of loud guitar riffs and sing-a-long hooks though they don’t live long in the memory.

The bells and whistles of the opening tracks get stripped away as the album continues and what’s left is one large, generic lump of music. It becomes increasingly clear that Papa Roach don’t really have anything to say with this offering. Instead, they present a perfectly adequate, but largely uninspiring record.

Recommendation: It depends. Fans of the band won’t be disappointed, the album is competent but ultimately lacks the spark needed to impress anyone without an interest in their work. If you’re curious as to what Papa Roach has been doing for the last 18 years, check it out. If not, you aren’t missing a whole lot.

Rating: 4/10.
